Sub-Zero refrigerator reset button: what to press and what it tells you

A stainless built-in refrigerator with French doors, two freezer drawers and a louvered grille across the top, framed by cream cabinetry beside a range.
On a built-in like this, the condenser sits behind the top grille, and a clogged one can bring a code straight back after a reset.

Sub-Zero refrigerators do not have a dedicated reset button. To reset one, turn it off with the Power key on the control panel, or switch off its breaker, leave it off for about five minutes, and turn it back on. If the display stays dark, or the same warning is back within a day, the restart has worked as a test: a saved mode, a dirty condenser or a failed part is behind it.

A proper power cycle, step by step

  1. Press Power on the control panel. If the panel does not respond, use the breaker.
  2. Wait around five minutes, so sealed-system pressure evens out and the compressor does not restart against a heavy load.
  3. Restore power. Fans and the compressor can take a few minutes to start.
  4. Keep the doors shut and allow a few hours before judging the temperature.

A tripped breaker often rests in a middle position that looks nearly on. Push it fully off, then firmly back on.

Settings that survive an outage on purpose

Some modes are built to come back after a power cut, which can look like a fault.

Sabbath Mode switches off the ice maker and the door alarm and keeps them off. It resumes when power returns, so no ice and no chime after a storm may simply mean the mode was left on.

A PRO 36 or PRO 48 that was left in Showroom Mode also returns to it after a power failure. Cycling power again will not clear it; it is turned off from the password-protected Service screen inside the Settings menu.

On a Classic (BI), Sh r on the display means Showroom Mode, and the unit will not cool at all. The way out: power the unit down, keep a matching Warmer and Colder key held, press Power once more, and only then lift your fingers off all three.

Double dashes (—) where a temperature should be mean that zone has been disabled. Turn the unit off with Power, then hold that zone’s Warmer key while you press Power again.

Codes a restart can clear, and codes it cannot

EC50 with Service flashing means the refrigerator compressor has been running for too long. If the readings are near normal, start with a condenser cleaning; after that, a 15-second press on the bell key (the door-ajar alarm) clears the code. If the compartment is already warm, skip the reset and book service.

A flashing Vacuum Condenser message points the same way: the unit is running warm or working too hard, from a clogged condenser, a door that is not sealing, or a fault in the unit itself. Clean the condenser, then turn the refrigerator back on, which resets the message.

EC40 with Service flashing, seen on models such as the 648PRO, means the freezer compressor is running too much. A door left ajar is the only cause an owner can fix; otherwise it is the sealed system, a fan or a temperature sensor.

EE with Service or the wrench flashing means a temperature sensor, called a thermistor, has failed: the freezer one when EE sits on the left, the refrigerator one when it sits on the right. Sub-Zero gives owners no troubleshooting step for it.

Holding ALARM and POWER at once, then letting go of both within 5 seconds, quiets a chiming Classic (BI) for 24 hours. It masks the fault; it fixes nothing. A flashing wrench with the chime means a major error was logged; a steady wrench means a minor fault that is not putting temperatures at risk.

When the display stays dark

Start at the wall. Sub-Zero calls for its Classic (CL) refrigerators to have a 115 VAC, 60 Hz supply on a dedicated 15 amp circuit with a grounded three-prong receptacle, and it does not recommend a GFCI, since one can cut the unit off. A unit on a GFCI or a shared circuit can lose power unnoticed.

If the breaker holds and the circuit is live but nothing lights, the fault is usually inside: the electronic control board, the display, or a connection between them. Summer thunderstorms around Ponte Vedra Beach bring short outages, and a surge as power snaps back can damage control electronics. Board replacement typically runs $400–$820; the firm figure follows an $80 diagnostic that rules out the wiring and the supply first.

Keeping the food safe meanwhile

By Sub-Zero’s own figures, an empty refrigerator takes roughly 3 hours before the fresh-food side passes 45°F (7°C) and the freezer passes 20°F (-6°C), so open the doors as little as you can. A well-stocked freezer holds its cold longer than a sparse one. Frozen food that still shows ice crystals, or reads 40°F (4°C) or lower, can go back into the freezer, though texture may suffer. Never taste anything to decide whether it is safe.

For a seasonal house, a planned shutdown avoids most of this; see closing a house for the summer.

What it costs

What does a Sub-Zero refrigerator power and controls repair cost in Ponte Vedra Beach?

Most of this work lands between $250 and $820, parts and labour together, and the visit that decides which end of that you are at is a flat $80 credited to the repair once you approve it. The firm number is written down after the diagnosis, not guessed at over the phone.

The bands this page falls into, parts and labour together.
Work Typical range
Diagnostic visit $80 flat, credited to the repair
Electronic control board $400–$820 parts and labour
Evaporator or condenser fan motor $250–$580 parts and labour
Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor $250–$640 parts and labour

Written estimate before anything is opened up. The invoice carries one number; a band is what can honestly be published before the cabinet is open. The full table is on the pricing page.

Visits behind this note

4.8 out of 5 from 67 customer reviews. Each one below is a single visit, described by the person who paid for it.

  • Our unit ran nonstop and the kitchen floor beside it was warm. The condenser was packed with dust and salt film. He cleaned it, measured the compressor draw afterward, and it now cycles off like it used to.

    Priya N.2026-06-30

  • Ice was forming on the back wall of the fresh food compartment and refreezing. He traced it to a defrost thermostat that had gone open circuit, not the control board another company wanted to sell us.

    Beth A.2026-05-22

  • Our built in held the freezer at zero but the produce was freezing too. A damper flap had cracked and was stuck open. He replaced the damper assembly and let the cabinet settle before rechecking both sides.

Questions we get asked

About Sub-Zero refrigerator power and controls repair

What does a Sub-Zero refrigerator power and controls repair cost in Ponte Vedra Beach?
Most of this work falls between $250 and $820, parts and labour together: electronic control board runs $400–$820, evaporator or condenser fan motor runs $250–$580 and defrost heater, thermostat or sensor runs $250–$640. Which band your cabinet is in is what the diagnostic settles, and the figure on the written estimate is the one you are asked to approve.
Is the $80 diagnostic charged on top of the repair?
No. The $80 covers the visit and the whole diagnostic sequence, and it comes off the repair the moment you approve the work. Decide against it and the diagnostic is all you have spent: the written findings are yours to take anywhere you like. 90 days on labour, 365 days on parts, and genuine OEM parts on every repair.
Where is the reset button on a Sub-Zero refrigerator?
There is no dedicated one. Turn the unit off with the Power key on the control panel or at the breaker, wait about five minutes, then turn it back on. Some codes have their own clearing step instead: EC50, for example, clears by holding the bell key for 15 seconds once the condenser has been cleaned.
How do I reset a Sub-Zero refrigerator after a power outage?
Usually you do not have to, because it restarts by itself when the power returns. If the display stays dark, check the breaker and any GFCI outlet first. If it came back in Sabbath Mode or Showroom Mode, that setting survived the outage on purpose and has to be switched off, not reset.
Why won't my Sub-Zero turn on after I reset the breaker?
If the breaker holds and the display is still black, either the supply or the controls are at fault. Check whether the unit shares its circuit or sits behind a GFCI, which Sub-Zero advises against. Past that, the usual suspect is the control board or the wiring to it, which a technician confirms during the $80 diagnostic.
